Bramble, a plant-based fresh dog food brand, is introducing a kidney-friendly line of recipes at Global Pet Expo's New Products Showcase. The new formulas are lower in protein and phosphorus, designed to reduce the workload on kidneys by limiting waste products generated during protein metabolism. According to the company, the recipes may also benefit dogs with liver disease or those requiring a low-fat diet.
The brand says approximately 10% of dogs suffer from chronic kidney disease, which can be managed in part through nutrition. The new recipes were formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists.
Feeding trial
Kelly Swanson, professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, conducted a feeding trial on Bramble's two existing human-grade plant-based formulas. Results indicated the diets were as digestible as premium animal-based diets and were associated with improved gut health and lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
"One thing to remember is that animals don't have ingredient requirements, they have nutrient requirements," said Swanson. "As long as they're consuming the essential nutrients in the correct amounts and ratios, dogs can be vegan, vegetarian or meat-eaters."
Amanda Rolat, founder and CEO of Bramble, created the company in 2021 after being unable to find an allergen-free, human-grade fresh pet food.
"I'm so excited for more dogs to be able to benefit from Bramble," Rolat said. "I created Bramble because I truly believe that all dogs can benefit from a high-quality, expertly formulated plant-based fresh food. It's easy to digest, clean protein that is nutritionally-packed and especially helpful for dogs with animal protein allergies and sensitive tummies. Since demonstrating the benefits of feeding Bramble in our feeding trial, it seemed like the natural next step to formulate recipes aimed at helping more dogs with specific health conditions."
