Pet food toppers continue to be a growing opportunity in the pet space. Pet owners are more interested than ever in customizing their animals’ meals, and toppers can be a wallet-friendly way to dip into freeze-dried options, liquids such as bone broth or goat milk, or various wet items made to supplement kibble. Additionally, pet owners are looking for nutrition and wellness solutions, and they’re turning to pet food to provide them — this gives toppers an additional way to perform within their market segment.
“New topper forms continue to drive a lot of innovation in the category,” said Brian Quinn, brand director for premium pet food company Solid Gold. “Up until now, we’ve seen a lot of freeze-dried toppers in market, but at SuperZoo 2023 we started to see many more air-dried options coming to market. This seems to be positioned for success because of the unique drying process, which preserves a lot of the nutrients in the food and also keeps a lot of the flavor, making this a highly palatable and nutritious option for pets.”
