As Gen Z enters the workforce under current economic conditions, they’re taking on small pets as companions.

Gen Z has entered the conversation when it comes to small pet ownership, and they’re helping to evolve the segment alongside Millennials and Gen X, according to data.

“Across birds, small animals and horses, we’re seeing growing enthusiasm and deeper engagement from today’s pet owners,” said Pete Scott, American Pet Products Association (APPA) president and CEO, in the organization’s 2025 Bird, Small Animal & Horse Report. “Generational growth and new purchasing patterns demonstrate that these categories are expanding in meaningful ways and creating fresh opportunities for the pet care industry.”
