The U.S. FDA announced that Go Raw LLC has expanded a recall first issued Feb. 17, 2026, to add a lot of Steve's Real Food Freeze-Dried Chicken Recipe because of potentially low levels of thiamine, or vitamin B1.
Thiamine is an essential water-soluble vitamin required for normal carbohydrate metabolism and neurologic function in cats and dogs. Cats are considered more susceptible to deficiency than dogs because of their higher dietary requirement for the vitamin and limited capacity to compensate for inadequate intake.
Pets that consume a thiamine-deficient diet over an extended period may develop clinical signs of deficiency. Early signs can include decreased appetite, vomiting, excessive salivation, weight loss or poor growth.
As the deficiency progresses, neurological signs may develop, including ventroflexion of the neck — bending the head toward the floor — mental dullness, vision changes, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures. In severe or prolonged cases, the deficiency may progress to profound weakness and lethargy, and advanced deficiency can be life-threatening without intervention.
One lot added to recall
The newly added lot is a 1.25-pound bag of Steve's Real Food Freeze-Dried Chicken Recipe with lot code C26022 and a best-by date of Jan. 22, 2028. The product is sold in a beige, zip-locked package with a maroon stripe, and the lot code and best-by date appear on the front of the bag.
The company previously recalled three Quest Cat Food Chicken Recipe products: a 10-ounce bag of freeze-dried nuggets (lot code C25288, best-by date Oct. 15, 2027); a 2-pound bag of the frozen diet (lot code MCD25350, best-by date June 16, 2027); and a 12-pound bag of the frozen diet (lot code MCC25321, best-by date May 17, 2027).
The expanded recall product was distributed through retail stores in Colorado, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Michigan, California, Texas, Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, Idaho and Montana.
Products now manufactured with vitamin premix
Go Raw said all current Steve's Real Food products are being manufactured with updated formulations that include a new vitamin premix and that those are the only formulations now being distributed to retailers and consumers.
The company said it worked with distributors and retailers throughout its supply chain and confirmed that the affected lot is no longer in distribution channels. Although it does not believe the product remains available for purchase, it issued the voluntary recall out of caution.
Go Raw said its investigation provided insight into the complexities of thiamine stability and analytical testing, noting that thiamine is a sensitive nutrient and that test results can vary significantly even in products formulated with elevated levels. The company said it is continuing to work with the U.S. FDA and industry experts to better understand testing methodologies and support ongoing research.
The company said additional testing and evaluation are still underway and that it remains committed to following the data, maintaining transparency and improving its understanding of the nutrient.
