Revival Animal Health LLC is voluntarily expanding its recall of several canine and goat milk replacer products due to variable vitamin D levels that resulted in either deficient or excessive concentrations.

In April, the company recalled its Breeder's Edge Foster Care Canine and Shelter's Choice Canine Milk Replacers and has now expanded the recall to include Breeder's Edge Foster Care GM (goat milk) products. Affected products were sold nationwide through online retailers and pet stores.

According to the U.S. FDA, dogs ingesting elevated vitamin D levels may exhibit vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness, lethargy, reduced growth and weight loss. At very high levels, vitamin D can cause calcification of soft tissues, including the kidney. Puppies ingesting low vitamin D levels over several weeks may develop lethargy, weakness, bone deformities, painful and swollen joints and lameness due to weakened or malformed bones (rickets).

The goat milk products were added after testing confirmed elevated vitamin D levels. Revival Animal Health said it is reviewing the manufacturer relationship and will not distribute the milk replacer products until their safety is confirmed. The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
