Mars Petcare US Inc. is voluntarily recalling two lots of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2-ounce dog food. The company said the products did not meet its safety and quality standards and had been sent to a third-party vendor for destruction. Mars later discovered the product appears to have been fraudulently diverted and sold in the U.S. marketplace.
The recalled product may contain metal and plastic foreign material. The company said sharp metal and plastic pieces in the cans could pose a hazard to dogs, with health risks ranging from choking to lacerations or gastrointestinal blockages. Consumers who fed the recalled product to their dog and have concerns should contact their veterinarian.
Mars said it is working with authorities to determine how the products entered the marketplace and is committed to helping consumers identify and remove the affected products. The company has received no reports of pet illness or injury to date.
