Globally, US-based businesses occupy the first seven spots on Petfood Industry’s Top Pet Food Companies database, in terms of annual revenue.

Two US dog and cat food industry juggernauts

Of the top 10 US-based pet food companies, the top two bring in more revenue than the other eight combined. Mars Petcare and Nestlé Purina together account for US$29,141,400,000 in pet food revenues worldwide, compared to the US$8,894,747,000 brought in by the rest of the top US dog and cat food industry companies.

In 2014 and 2015, Mars solidified its place as the world’s leading pet food company after it purchased 90% of Proctor & Gamble’s pet food business in a US$2.9 billion deal. In 2016, Mars has focused on positioning its acquired brands.

Nestlé Purina made two acquisitions in recent years that may help the company adapt to current growth trends in specialty cat and dog food. In January 2014, Nestlé Purina acquired Zuke’s Performance Pet Nutrition (natural pet treats). In September 2015, Nestlé acquired Merrick Pet Care (natural and organic pet food).

Eight pet food companies jockey for position

Like the two titans of the US dog and cat food industry, the other top pet food companies have been involved in mergers and acquisitions. These business deals have shifted the rankings of these eight companies, reported Petfood Industry’s 2016 Top Pet Food Companies issue.

For example, Big Heart Brands rose to third place in the Top Pet Food Companies database. In February 2015, the J.M. Smucker Company acquired Big Heart along with its complete portfolio of dog and cat food and treats.
