The economic contributions of pet food manufacturing to Missouri, Kansas, Pennsylvania, California and Iowa consistently rank highest in the United States among all measures considered by the American Feed Industry Association in the report “Economic Contribution of the Animal Feed and Pet Food Manufacturing Industries.” Each of the top five states host more than a dozen pet food manufacturing facilities, ranging from 18 in Iowa to 59 in Pennsylvania.

Within these states, certain congressional districts contained the majority of the jobs. The 2023 U.S. federal congressional districts with the most pet food manufacturing jobs included Kansas-2 (19,267), Missouri-7 (11,342), Missouri-1 (7,632), Pennsylvania-7 (7,492) and Nebraska-3 (7,083).
The pet food manufacturers in Missouri, Kansas, Pennsylvania, California and Iowa contributed the following total activity to the economy:
- US$16.9 billion added value, including US$8.6 billion in labor income
- 116,807 jobs out of 283,736 jobs nationally
- US$42.7 billion in output
- US$3.1 billion in local, state, and federal taxes
Dog, cat and other pet food manufacturing contributed an estimated US$40.0 billion in total value added across the United States. The top five states in this category are Missouri (US$5.0 billion), Kansas (US$4.3 billion), Pennsylvania (US$3.2 billion), Iowa (US$2.3 billion) and California (US$2.3 billion).
Pet food manufacturing contributed an estimated USUS$20.4 billion in total labor income within and related to the industry in the U.S. The top five states (Missouri, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and California) have an estimated total labor income contribution of more than US$1 billion, with Missouri leading the way at US$2.5 billion. The highest congressional districts in terms of their estimated labor income contribution are Kansas-2 (US$1.3 billion), Missouri-1 (US$0.8 billion), Missouri- 7 (US$0.7 billion), Pennsylvania-7 (US$0.6 billion) and Nebraska-3 (US$0.5 billion)

The U.S. congressional districts with the highest estimated taxes paid by the pet food manufacturing industries included Kansas-2 (USUS$534.4 million), Missouri- 6 (US$360.7 million), Iowa-3 (US$247.9 million), Pennsylvania-7 (US$221.3 million) and Nebraska-3 (US$205.1 million).
