Thai Union Group PCL, a global leader in the seafood industry, has announced new partnerships with Seven Clean Seas and Second Life to strengthen its commitment to combating ocean plastic pollution. These collaborations are part of Thai Union's broader SeaChange 2030 sustainability strategy, which targets the removal of 1,500 tons of ocean-bound plastic by 2030.
As part of the partnership with Seven Clean Seas, Thai Union has deployed a HIPPO (High Impact Plastic Pollution remOver) system in the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. This solar-powered device, located near Wat Chak Daeng temple, captures and removes waste from the river before it can reach the ocean, helping to significantly reduce plastic pollution in the area.
In addition, Thai Union's collaboration with Second Life focuses on collecting and recycling ocean-bound plastic from the coastal and remote island regions of Krabi, Ranong, Trang and Phang-nga. These efforts aim to address plastic pollution at the source by preventing waste from entering the ocean.
These initiatives are expected to make a substantial impact, with Thai Union on track to collect approximately 250 tons of plastic waste this year alone. Adam Brennan, chief sustainability officer at Thai Union, emphasized the importance of these partnerships in the company's ongoing efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
