IFEEDER reports advances in pet food, feed sustainability research

The Institute for Feed Education and Research detailed progress on ingredient quantification studies, life cycle assessments and methane mitigation projects.

Ifeeder Annual Update CoverThe Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER) released its annual update detailing research and education initiatives supporting the animal feed and pet food supply chain.

"Our work reflects a commitment to provide tools and knowledge that help the industry address today's challenges and prepare for tomorrow's opportunities," said Lara Moody, IFEEDER executive director. "We continue to grow the number and scope of projects we can annually undertake so we may better serve the industry's needs."

The organization completed two reports quantifying ingredients used in U.S. pet food and consumed as livestock and poultry feed, with focus on materials upcycled from other industries. IFEEDER also advanced life cycle assessment data through the Global Feed LCA Institute and conducted on-farm research examining methane mitigation strategies in dairy through feed additives and ingredients.

Current projects include examining supply chain resilience for vitamins and amino acids, updating swine nutrition requirements and expanding U.S. feed ingredient data for environmental impact assessments.

IFEEDER continues working with the American Feed Industry Association's (AFIA) Equipment Manufacturing Committee to support industry education. The committee generated $23,476 in scholarship funds this year for students pursuing careers in feed and grain sciences.
