Nestlé Purina PetCare taking steps to reduce greenhouse emissions

Company has launched its first hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck.

Nestlé Purina PetCare has launched its first hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck in collaboration with The Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) and Nikola Corporation, marking a significant step in Purina's sustainability strategy. The truck, part of Purina's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will transport products like Tidy Cats cat litter with zero tailpipe emissions.

The Class 8 Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric truck will travel between Stockton, Maricopa and Modesto, California. With a range of up to 500 miles and the ability to refuel in under 20 minutes, the truck will help Purina minimize its carbon footprint. According to Nikola, each truck can prevent 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to removing 23 passenger vehicles from the road for a year.

Travis Krous, Purina's senior director of supply chain operations, emphasized the importance of testing new technology as part of Purina's sustainability goals. He noted that the company is committed to regional production and distribution to reduce long-distance transportation emissions.

Tyler Coventry, KAG's executive vice president of food products, expressed enthusiasm for supporting Purina’s sustainability targets. Steve Girsky, Nikola's CEO, underscored the collaboration’s alignment with Nikola’s mission to drive innovation in transportation.

Purina is also focusing on sustainability in its products, such as using solar drying technology at its Maricopa factory to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, by the end of 2024, all Tidy Cats litter jugs will be made with 100% recycled content, further reducing plastic waste.
