The past week, October 18-24, in the pet food industry brought an ongoing Salmonella outbreak in Canada, a fire and a supplier’s new facility in the U.S. Meanwhile, the passing of an industry veteran brought solemnity to the week.


31 sick, 7 hospitalized in Canada from Salmonella-contaminated dog treats
Public health officials in Canada reported that 31 people across four provinces and territories became ill from a suspected outbreak of Salmonella linked to dog-treat and food products, with seven hospitalized. Illnesses occurred between mid-February and late-September 2025, and while no deaths have been reported, compounding concerns stem from the fact that no single supplier has yet been identified.

DSM-Firmenich opened a pet food-dedicated premix facility in Tonganoxie, Kansas. The “NextGen Tonganoxie” site features fully automated micro-ingredient additions, containerized transfer systems and end-to-end traceable batch assembly. The facility is positioned to support North American pet food manufacturers with premixes ranging from standard vitamin and mineral fortification to premium functional blends such as microbiome solutions and omega-3s.

Fire breaks out at Alphia pet food plant in Ogden, Utah, US

Alphia Pet Food experienced a fire at its manufacturing facility in Ogden, Utah, believed to have originated in a hot oven used for dog biscuits. The estimated damage was about $3 million. The facility, which spans an entire city block, was fully evacuated while fire crews addressed complications in ventilation and duct systems.
