dsm-firmenich will launch Veramaris O3 Max Pure at Petfood Forum 2026, billing it as the first microalgal oil to deliver the same 3:2 EPA:DHA omega-3 ratio as high-quality fish oil.
The ingredient will be unveiled April 27-29 in Kansas City at booth 1307. According to the company, Veramaris O3 Max Pure is produced via closed-system microalgae fermentation and provides a non-GMO, vegan source of both EPA and DHA in a single ingredient, with no contaminants and consistent quality across batches.
Fish oil, the conventional source of EPA and DHA in pet food, has faced supply volatility, fluctuating costs and inconsistent nutrient ratios, along with sustainability concerns tied to marine sourcing. dsm-firmenich says Veramaris O3 Max Pure is designed to allow manufacturers to substitute the ingredient directly for fish oil without adjusting formulations or label claims.
EPA and DHA are associated with supporting brain, heart, joint, skin and coat health in cats and dogs.
"For today's pet parents, pet health is personal — it is held to the same standards as their own health," said George B. Josef, global director of business development, nutritional lipids and alternative proteins at dsm-firmenich. "As pet nutrition continues to evolve, our customers are looking for solutions that combine scientific credibility with formulation simplicity and supply security. Veramaris O3 Max Pure reflects that shift — delivering a full-spectrum omega-3 profile in a single, consistent solution that supports both product performance and the planet."
New research also presented at Petfood Forum 2026
dsm-firmenich will also present new research at Petfood Forum on its dual Lactobacillus postbiotic, LB Fermentate HF. One study in adult dogs found that supplementation was associated with significantly reduced heart rate reactivity and a trend toward lower cortisol responses to environmental stressors. A separate study in puppies with giardiasis found that supplementation significantly reduced the risk of Giardia spreading and the incidence of Giardia-linked chronic diarrhea.
Also on display will be an updated version of Veramaris Pets, now formulated to deliver 30% more EPA at no additional cost, along with a look at the company's pet-dedicated premix facility in Tonganoxie, Kansas, U.S. The company will also showcase a Natural Cheddar Cheese Concentrate developed to enhance palatability in pet food products.
Acording to Petfood Industry's Industry Leaders database, dsm-firmenich is a Swiss company with dual headquarters in Kaiseraugst, Switzerland, and Maastricht, Netherlands, listed on the Euronext Amsterdam, with operations in almost 60 countries and revenues of more than €12 billion.
