The petfood market in Romania was worth nearly EUR168 million (US$227.7 million) in 2013, up around 6 percent on the previous year, according to a report from Romania-Insider.com.
There are 11 million pets in Romania, including 4.1 million dogs and 4 million cats. However, out of the number of dogs, 1.5 million are stray dogs, according to the report citing Euromonitor.
Romanians spend nearly EUR112 million (US$165.4 million) on dog food, while they spend significantly less for cat food at about EUR48 million (US$65.1 million), despite the similar number of dogs and cats as pets.
