Top 10 cat ownership per capita in Europe; Hungary #1

The ranking of nations by per capita cat population differs from the gross numbers of cats in the country.

In their latest report, the European Pet Food Federation (FEDIAF) estimated the number of cats in Europe in 2017. While this allows a ranking of cat population in these countries by total number, the ranking by per capita cat population differs from the total numbers of cats in each European nation.

Top 10 cat-owning nations in Europe in 2017

FEDIAF estimated that at least 80 million European households include at least one pet animal. In European Union countries, 26 percent of households owned dogs, compared to 24 percent in Europe as a whole.

The top countries for cat ownership purr capita in 2017 were:

  1. Hungary - .235 cats per person
  2. Romania - .220 cats per person
  3. France - .207 cats per person
  4. Belgium - .176 cats per person
  5. Germany - .166 cats per person
  6. Poland - .160 cats per person
  7. Russia - .156 cats per person
  8. Netherlands - .153 cats per person
  9. Portugal - .136 cats per person
  10. Italy - .126 cats per person

The per capita population of cats in each nation was estimated by dividing the approximate population of each country in 2018 by the cat population from the FEDIAF report. Human population data was taken from Worldometer.info, which elaborated the numbers using United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division figures. Estimated 2017 human population data was not readily available.

  2. Germany - 13,700,000 cats
  3. France - 13,500,000 cats
  4. United Kingdom - 7,900,000 cats
  5. Italy - 7,480,000 cats
  6. Poland - 6,100,000 cats
  7. Romania - 4,300,000 cats
  8. Spain - 3,145,000 cats
  9. Netherlands - 2,620,000 cats
  10. Hungary - 2,280,000 cats

European pet food industry in 2017

In 2017, FEDIAF estimated that annual sales of pet food in Europe reached a turnover of EUR20.5 billion and a volume of 8.5 million tons. The pet food industry grew two percent per year over the past three years.

FEDIAF counted 132 companies producing pet food in Europe in 2017. Those companies operated approximately 200 production facilities.
