Cat food sales top EUR3.2B German pet food market 2018

Retail sales of pet food, treats and supplies in Germany reached EUR4.95 billion in 2018, including online sales and bird seed, according to Industrieverband Heimtierbedarf (Pet Supplies Industry Association, IVH).

Retail sales of pet food, treats and supplies in Germany reached EUR4.95 billion (US$5.60 billion) in 2018, including online sales and bird seed, according to Industrieverband Heimtierbedarf (Pet Supplies Industry Association, IVH). The German pet food and products industry grew 1.5% over 2017. Online sales made up EUR625 million (US$707 million) of the total. Bird seed accounted for EUR100 million (US$113 million). Ready-to-eat pet food formed the largest part of the German market with EUR3.23 billion (US$3.66 billion) in sales, an increase of 1.7% over 2017.

German pet food sales by animal type

Cat food sales outpaced dog and other pet foods in the German market in 2018, although it declined slightly from 2017. Cat food sales in Germany fell 0.4 percent to EUR1.58 billion in 2018. Cat treats sales in Germany grew though to EUR238 million. That represents an increase of 1.4%.

Within the German pet food market, dog food sales increased 4.5% to EUR1.45 billion in brick-and-mortar retail sales. Canned wet dog food grew the most rapidly at 6.3 percent to reach sales of EUR473 million. Dog treat and snack sales in Germany increased 4.9 percent in 2018 to hit EUR538 million.  Dry dog food sales increased 2.1% over 2017 levels to EUR435 million.

Small animal pet food sales revenue in Germany fell by 2.3% in 2018 to EUR85 million. Fish food sales also declined in Germany to EUR 52 million, a decline of 3.7%. Pet bird food increased 1.5% to EUR66 million.

Overall EU pet food sales in 2018

The European Pet Food Federation (FEDIAF) released market and pet ownership data during its annual meeting in Prague in the report “FEDIAF Facts & Figures.” In 2018, pet food contributed EUR21 billion (US$23.7 billion) to the European Union economy, making it the largest segment of the EUR39.5 billion (US$44.6 billion) EU pet sector. Pet food sales volume in the EU reached 8.8 million metric tons in 2018. The EU pet industry grew 2.5% in value over the past three years.
