The annual #PetPower event, hosted by Pet Alliance Europe, gathered over 100 guests, including members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and Council, animal welfare organizations, assistance animal associations and pet industry stakeholders in Brussels. The event, which continues to highlight the significance of pets in society, celebrated World Animal Day and the broad commitment to pet welfare. Many attendees brought their pets to enjoy the festivities.
A key highlight of the evening was the presence of Marie-José Enders-Slegers, president of the International Association for Human-Animal Interaction Organisations (IAHAIO), as the special guest speaker. Enders-Slegers emphasized the vital roles pets play, especially in crisis situations, with a particular focus on therapy animals, referencing their importance during the war in Ukraine and the recent floods in Europe. She praised these animals as heroes, offering comfort and companionship in highly stressful environments.
"It is inspiring to see so many organizations come together to recognize the vital role that pets play in our lives," said Marie-José. "It is our responsibility to protect these brave animals, ensuring their welfare as they continue to assist in crisis situations."
Leaders from Pet Alliance Europe's founding partners, including Rosa Carbonell, president of FEDIAF, and Roxane Feller, secretary general of AnimalhealthEurope, expressed gratitude for the insightful speech. They reaffirmed their commitment to raising awareness of therapy pets and promoting high standards of care for pets and assistance animals.
The event concluded with MEP Petras Auštrevičius, who delivered closing remarks on the importance of pet welfare. He also announced the winners of the 2024 Best Buddies in the Brussels Bubble photo contest, celebrating the bonds between pets and their owners.
