Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N’ Wash show commitment to sustainability

Organizations have recycled 27,000 pounds of pet product packaging in the first year of their partnership with TerraCycle.

In a significant move towards sustainability, Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N’ Wash have successfully recycled 27,000 pounds of pet product packaging in the first year of their partnership with TerraCycle, a leader in sustainability solutions. This initiative has kept plastic waste from ending up in landfills and incinerators, marking a notable achievement in the pet industry’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution.

Pet Supplies Plus, the largest pet retail franchise in the U.S., and Wag N’ Wash, a grooming and natural pet food franchise, have committed to making sustainability a priority, addressing the pet industry’s significant contribution to plastic pollution. With 66% of U.S. households owning a pet, the industry produces an estimated 300 million pounds of plastic packaging annually, most of which cannot be processed by standard curbside recycling services due to its complex material composition.

Through in-store recycling stations, customers are encouraged to drop off empty pet food, treat and litter packaging as well as delivery bags, regardless of brand or pet type. These materials are sent to TerraCycle, where they are recycled into raw materials used for new products.

Chris Rowland, CEO of Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N’ Wash, praised the initiative’s success, stating, “We are beyond proud of our neighbors nationwide who recycled 13.5 tons of plastic that would have otherwise been thrown out. This is just the beginning of our commitment to sustainability and helping create a cleaner world for our neighbors and pets.”

This recycling program aims to reduce plastic waste and make it convenient for pet owners to contribute to sustainability efforts. Tom Szaky, TerraCycle’s CEO and founder, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that it sets a new standard for sustainability in the pet industry.
