Half of Gen-Z dog owners in the United Kingdom say they prioritize their dog's emotional wellbeing over their own, according to survey data released by Adaptil for Pet Anxiety Month.

The survey, conducted by Perspectus Global in February 2025 among 1,000 U.K. dog owners, found that 75% of all dog owners believe their dog experiences stress or anxiety, with 15% reporting it occurs constantly. On average, owners notice signs of anxiety up to eight times a month.

The most common signs owners reported include increased barking (44%), a tucked tail (42%), pacing (34%) and trembling (29%).

Gen-Z owners, defined as those ages 18–29, showed the highest levels of concern. Nearly three-quarters (74%) said they frequently worry about their dog's feelings, compared with 61% of millennials and 43% of boomers. Across all generations, owners reported spending an average of 22 days a month worrying about their dog's anxiety.

The survey also noted that the U.K. now has an estimated 13 million dogs, a figure that may soon surpass the country's estimated 14.4 million children.

Jimmy Bratley, veterinary practitioner at Adaptil, said awareness of available solutions remains low despite widespread concern.

"It's evident how many dog owners across all generations worry about their pets experiencing low mood and anxiety," Bratley said. "However, awareness of available solutions remains low, especially with the statistics of dog owners who continually worry about their dog's anxiety for a large proportion of every month."

Bratley added that Pet Anxiety Month, which runs throughout March, is central to Adaptil's outreach efforts.

"We are committed to raising awareness about pet anxiety, helping owners support their dogs' wellbeing, and giving our pets a voice when they need it most," he said.
