Annamaet Petfoods, a family-owned company celebrating 40 years in business, has built its reputation on science-driven pet nutrition formulas developed by in-house nutritionists and backed by over 160 scientific publications. The company continues to grow faster than the overall pet food industry by prioritizing ingredient quality, transparency, and formulas that address specific pet health needs across different life stages and activity levels.

  • Annamaet has contributed over 160 scientific publications to peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating its commitment to advancing companion animal nutrition research.
  • The company employs two nutritionists who collaborate throughout product development to ensure every formula is thoroughly researched and refined before market launch.
  • Pre-therapeutic canine formulas, including Lean and Sensitive Skin & Stomach, are growing at approximately 25% year over year, reflecting pet owners' focus on proactive health.
  • Annamaet's Feline Lean weight management formula took over 10 years in development to meet the company's strict standards for nutrition, palatability, and quality.
  • The company prioritizes high-quality ingredient sourcing, recognizing that not all ingredients are created equal and that ingredient quality significantly impacts nutritional value and product effectiveness.

Annamaet Petfoods is an independent, family-owned company celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, and while much has changed in the last four decades, everything that makes this company special to its founders has stayed the same.

“I really believe that what has distinguished Annamaet over the past 40 years is our unwavering commitment to nutrition, science and our genuine passion for improving the lives of pets,” says Rob Downey, president and CEO. “I didn't start this company because I wanted to build a pet food business; I started it because I couldn't find a commercial diet that would properly fuel our family’s canine athletes, and so I immersed myself in the research and set out to create something better.”

According to Rob, Annamaet has always aimed to follow the science rather than the trends.

“Innovation has always been driven by research, allowing us to continually develop formulas that reflect the latest advances in companion animal nutrition,” he says. “One of the unique strengths of Annamaet is that we have two nutritionists working collaboratively throughout the product development process. Their combined expertise provides valuable scientific review and helps ensure every formula is thoroughly researched, evaluated and refined before it reaches the market. Today, we've contributed over 160 scientific publications and peer-reviewed journals, and that commitment to advancing nutrition science continues to shape everything we do.”

Of course, no company launches without its setbacks.

“Looking back, it's incredible to see how far we've come,” says Rob. “Our very first formulas took months to perfect. We went through more than 16,000 pounds of food just to achieve the right palatability while maintaining the nutritional standards we believed pets deserved. We named the company after my mother Anna Mae and made our first sale on my mother's birthday, which made for an emotional moment. Every year on our anniversary, my wife and I raise a toast and laugh, saying, ‘What were we thinking?’”

Company growth and meeting pet owners where they're at

Annamaet has used its well-established focus on scientific formulating to keep up with the times, continuing to flourish as pet owners become more savvy about what they feed their animals.

“Much of our growth over the years has also been driven by today’s more informed pet owners,” says Rob. “The pet parent has changed dramatically. Consumers are looking beyond marketing claims and want to understand what’s behind the products they buy. They’re looking for brands that can demonstrate genuine expertise, scientific credibility and a long-term commitment to pet health.”

It's an insight that has led to continued wins in a saturated market currently working with economic fatigue and consumers who are doing their best to balance their pets’ needs and their own wallets.

“Overall, Annamaet sales continue to grow, and we’re proud that we’ve been growing faster than the overall pet food industry,” says Alex Downey, executive vice president, G2. “The category has faced challenges, with traditional kibble being relatively flat to down, but our focus on science-driven nutrition and products that address evolving pet health needs has continued to resonate with pet owners.”

A recent launch the company is particularly proud of is its Feline Lean, a weight management formula for cats that hit the market in October 2025.

“Feline Lean has had an incredible start in the months since its launch,” says Alex. “This formula was more than 10 years in development because we wanted to make sure we created a weight management diet for cats that met our standards for nutrition, palatability and quality before bringing it to market.”

According to Alex, the company is also seeing strong continued growth in its pre-therapeutic canine formulas, including Lean, Sensitive Skin & Stomach, and its senior formulas, which are growing at approximately 25% year over year.

“These products reflect a larger trend we’re seeing among pet parents who are becoming more proactive and looking for nutrition that can support their pets’ health throughout different life stages,” he says. “The numbers are encouraging because they reflect what we’ve believed from the beginning: When you start with science and create products that solve real needs for pets and pet parents, growth follows.”

Current challenges and opportunities

Annamaet has had plenty of success, but there are still challenges to overcome in an industry like pet food. Interestingly, Rob says there's some familiarity to it all.

“I think some of the biggest challenges we face today are actually the same ones we’ve been focused on for the past 40 years: maintaining access to high-quality ingredients and ensuring we never compromise on the standards behind our products,” says Rob. “Ingredient availability and quality are ongoing considerations. One thing many pet parents don’t realize is that ingredients used in pet food can come in different quality levels. For example, not all chicken is created equal. Two products may have very similar ingredient lists on the label, but there can be significant differences in the quality, sourcing and nutritional value of those ingredients. That’s one reason consumers may see two products that appear similar, yet have very different price points.”

Annamaet has always strived to be intentional about ingredient selection and supplier relationships, which Rob says has served them well over the last 40 years. In fact, being intentional about all its relationships is a constant consideration for the company.

“Another challenge we see across the industry is the changing retail environment, particularly for independent pet stores,” says Rob. “Many retailers are facing challenges finding and retaining knowledgeable employees. That’s important because today’s pet owners are looking for more than just a product on a shelf. They want education and guidance from people they trust.”

If retailers are who pet owners are looking to trust, then pet food companies need to ensure retailers have what they need to gain that trust.

“The strongest independent retailers are the ones that invest in their teams and create knowledgeable, passionate staff members who can help customers make informed decisions,” says Rob. “That personal connection is still incredibly valuable, and we believe there is a tremendous opportunity in brick-and-mortar retail with partners who share that commitment to education and customer service.”

As for opportunities, the overall consumer drive toward health and wellness has done nothing but bolster Annamaet.

“Since the pandemic, consumers have become much more focused on proactive health,” says Alex. “People are recognizing that proper nutrition, regular exercise and preventive care play an important role in long-term well-being, and that same mindset has extended to their pets.”

As dogs and cats have become true members of the family, he says, pet owners are paying much closer attention to what they feed, how active their pets are and the role nutrition plays in supporting a healthier, longer life.

“They’re looking beyond marketing claims and seeking out companies that have real expertise and a scientific foundation behind their products,” says Alex. “That’s an area where Annamaet has always been focused.”

Annamaet's roots in formulating for athletic dogs are also still a very important part of the company's evolution.

“We see tremendous opportunity in the continued growth of canine sports and performance activities,” says Alex. “On any given weekend, there are dogs and their owners participating in everything from recreational activities to highly competitive events where dogs earn titles and even prize money. These active dogs have unique nutritional requirements, and that creates an exciting opportunity for a company like Annamaet with our background working hands on with high-level canine athletes, and our focus on science-based nutrition for dogs at every stage of life and every activity level.”

The future of the pet food industry — and Annamaet's place in it

According to Alex, the future of the pet food industry will continue to be driven by the evolution of the pet owner, and it will most certainly continue to grow, “especially for companies that embrace good science, optimal nutrition and transparency in their operations,” he says. “Pet parents are looking beyond marketing claims and want to understand the research, expertise and standards behind the products they purchase. Companies that can demonstrate a genuine commitment to pet health will continue to earn consumer trust.”

There's also the near-constant pipeline of human-to-pet trends.

“We’ll continue to see the pet food industry follow many of the same trends we’ve seen in human nutrition,” says Alex. “Consumers are looking for cleaner labels, greater transparency and products that support healthier lifestyles. That’s why we’ve seen growth in categories like raw, frozen and freeze-dried nutrition. Even when pet owners aren’t completely changing their pet’s diet, many are incorporating toppers, supplements or other products to provide additional nutritional benefits. Ultimately, I think the future belongs to companies that can combine science, nutrition, transparency and responsibility.”

As for Annamaet, the company appears to be in good hands for yet another generation of the family-owned business.

“One of the things I’m most proud of today is seeing the next generation become involved in the business,” says Rob. “I couldn’t be more proud of Alex, Sarah and Mike and the passion and commitment they’re bringing to Annamaet. A few years ago, I realized how important it was to bring the next generation into leadership and give them the opportunity to build on what we’ve created.

“They’ve joked that I need to get out of the way so they can really take the company forward, but I don’t know if I’ll ever fully retire,” he says. “When something is your passion, it doesn’t feel like work. I’ve been fortunate to spend my life doing something I love, and now I get to watch the next generation take that passion and carry it forward.”

Rob says he is most confident about the fact that the values Annamaet is built on will continue.

“It’s not just about making pet food; it’s about our commitment to science, quality, transparency and helping pets live healthier lives,” he says. “After 40 years, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, but I’m even more excited about what comes next. Seeing the next generation involved, from Alex, Sarah and Mike to the younger team members and interns (even my grandkids) learning the business, it makes me confident that Annamaet’s story is far from finished.”
