Dutch pet food company HenArt has launched Levendo, a complete dog food for adult and senior dogs built around a proprietary blend of fermented proteins featuring Finnish biotech company Enifer’s Pekilo mycoprotein.
Levendo is a semi-moist food that is baked. According to the companies, Pekilo mycoprotein contains all essential amino acids, along with naturally occurring beta-glucans, B vitamins and spermidine. A canine feeding study showed strong protein digestibility for the ingredient, the companies said.
Levendo is formulated to European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) guidelines as a complete and balanced everyday diet. HenArt, based in Oosterhout, Netherlands, developed the fermentation blend and recipe in-house, with production handled by European manufacturers.
The food is sold through HenArt’s online store and a network of specialist distribution partners across Europe and the United Kingdom. HenArt said it is also opening Levendo to national pet retail chains, online pet retailers and grocery retailers across Europe.
Levendo is the first product in a planned range. HenArt is developing wet foods that will pair the fermentation blend with its TenderCraft technology.
“Dog owners are looking for more choice in how they feed their pets, but they do not want to compromise on nutrition, quality or enjoyment. With Levendo, we wanted to create an everyday food that could meet those expectations in its own right. Pekilo was a key part of making that possible,” said Henk Verhoeven, founder of HenArt.
According to the companies, the global dog food market was worth an estimated $48.1 billion in 2025. A 2025 international survey of more than 2,600 dog owners found that 85% of respondents considering alternative diets ranked nutritional adequacy as the most important factor in deciding whether to buy one.
First international consumer launch
For Enifer, Levendo is Pekilo’s first international consumer launch. The launch follows research that included a 60-day feeding study in which Pekilo showed high digestibility and palatability, no negative impact on stool quality and early signs of potential immune-support benefits, the company said. Enifer is commissioning a 3,000-ton Pekilo factory and plans to begin full-scale production in 2027.
“We have spent years showing that Pekilo can deliver the nutrition, digestibility and palatability pet food manufacturers need. Levendo is an important next step: It shows that Pekilo performs in formulation and production. That is a significant milestone in moving mycoprotein from promising ingredient technology into mainstream pet nutrition,” said Simo Ellilä, CEO of Enifer.
The Levendo name draws on “leaven,” the starter used in sourdough bread, and the Dutch word “levend,” meaning “alive.” HenArt said Levendo is intended to be the first of several products built on its fermentation platform, while Enifer continues to expand Pekilo into new pet food applications and markets.
