Thai Union Corporate invests in insect-based pet treats

Investing in Ografood will help Thai Union move closer to enhancing the nutritional aspects of their pet food products.

Thai Union Group Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) Fund has invested in Orgafeed, an insect-based pet treat start-up in Thailand. 

Orgafeed produces sustainable pet food and pet treats based on insect protein under their brand "Laika”. They use black soldier fly larvae, which are raised on a diet from pre-consumed food waste, supporting circular economy principles. Orgafeed has been a part of the first batch of SPACE-F, Thailand’s first global food-tech startup incubator and accelerator, co-founded by Thai Union in 2019. 

The investment in Orgafeed, and further collaboration will support the future growth of Thai Union PetCare (now “i-Tail”), and is in line with i-Tail’s new roadmap that utilizes innovation to enhance the nutritional aspect of the Company’s products. 

Thai Union recently expanded its pet food operations in Japan by forming a subsidiary to distribute, sell and import pet food and pet-related products.

Thai Union’s CVC fund has identified alternative proteins, functional nutrition and biotechnology, in addition to new technologies along the food value chain, as strategic areas for investment. The fund invests in, and partners with, early-stage, entrepreneurial companies working in these areas, seeking to support and accelerate their development to grow the industry in line with Thai Union’s commitment to Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans.

Insect-based pet food ingredients have been growing in popularity for years, backed by sustainability and nutrition trends, while sometimes hindered by regulation. The pandemic reveals another marketable benefit of bug farms. “The phylogenetic distance between humans and hexapods gives good reasons to think that zoonoses are unlikely, and Ÿnsect’s scientific teams continuously study mealworms and assess potential risks,” Florent Dupriez, project manager, insect health, for France-based insect protein and oil producer Ÿnsect, wrote in an email. 

The startup insect-based dog treat company EntoNative raised EUR1.1 million (US$1.3 million) in a seed financing round. EntoNative received EUR950,000 from Brandenburg, Germany promotional bank ILB and EUR150,00 from other private investors. The fresh capital will be invested in the expansion of production and marketing. EntoNative manufactures snacks for dogs based on insects under the brand TeneTRIO. With the seed investment, mealworm breeding at the company location in Potsdam, Germany will be further expanded and expanded, while on the other hand product development and production will be financed.
