Champion Petfoods’ facility won pet food safety award

Champion Petfoods’ facility in Kentucky, USA, DogStar Kitchens, won the Global Markets Programme award at the Global Food Safety Conference in Texas, USA.

Champion Petfoods’ dog food facility in Kentucky, USA, DogStar Kitchens, won the Global Markets Programme award at the Global Food Safety Conference in Texas, USA. The pet food facility has been in operation for approximately one year.

The award was open to human and pet food manufacturers. The Global Food Safety Initiative organized the food safety award and conference.

DogStar was completed a month before the application deadline for Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification, which is a prerequisite for the GFSI award. A score of 70 percent is needed to pass; DogStar scored 94 percent.

Achieving certification was a goal for Champion during the planning phase of the DogStar Kitchen. The dog food facility also won an award from the Design-Build Institute of America. After FDA officials inspected the kitchens, they asked to train new inspectors there, according to a press release from Champion.
