Kinn Inc. founder publishes sustainability guide for pet care facilities

Alex McKinnon's new book offers pet care professionals actionable strategies for improving animal welfare, staff retention, environmental impact and profitability through integrated operational practices.

Alex McKinnon, founder of Kinn Inc., has published "Sustainability in Pet Care: Lessons in Leadership, Innovation, and Sustainability from the Frontlines of Pet Care," a resource addressing operational improvements across animal welfare, workforce management, environmental impact and financial performance for pet care facilities.

The book uses McKinnon's 4 P's Framework — Pets, People, Planet and Profits — to provide guidance on facility design, daily operations, staff training, resource management and leadership systems.

McKinnon drew from more than 30 years of executive leadership experience and interviews with over 20 pet care professionals to develop the content. The book covers facility design for animal health and stress reduction, enrichment and training protocols, staff retention strategies, resource consumption decisions and workflow optimization.

"For dogs, enrichment and training are essential tools for improving welfare," McKinnon writes in the book. "Because a dog's strongest sense is smell, just 10 minutes of scent-based enrichment can have a similar calming and confidence-building effect as approximately 40 minutes of walking."

The book addresses challenges facing pet care facilities including labor shortages, rising operational costs and expectations around care standards and transparency. For more information, click here.
