PremieRpet has funded the first pet-specific DEXA scanner in Latin America with a R$1 million (approximately US$176,000) donation to the University of São Paulo (USP), advancing veterinary research in pet obesity and chronic diseases.
The donation supports the new Multicare Center for Dogs and Cats at USP’s veterinary hospital, HOVET. The center is designed to support advanced studies in areas such as physical rehabilitation, pain management, cachexia, oncology and gastroenterology. It also marks a significant step in addressing rising obesity rates among pets in Brazil.
A recent study from USP’s veterinary school found that 40% of dogs in São Paulo are overweight. The new DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scanner — originally developed for human medicine — will be used to assess pets’ bone density, fat distribution and muscle mass loss, offering precise data for weight management and treatment plans.
The Multicare Center was inspired by the work of the late Professor Marcio Antonio Brunetto, a leading voice in pet nutrition research in Brazil. Before his death in 2023, Brunetto envisioned a facility equipped with advanced imaging tools like the DEXA scanner to better understand and manage pet health.
“This is a historic moment for veterinary science in Brazil and across Latin America,” said Fernando Maluf, PremieRpet vice president of international sales. “By investing in cutting-edge technologies like the DEXA scanner, we’re not only improving animal health and welfare but also reaffirming our commitment to innovation and education, helping pets lead healthier and happier lives.”
The DEXA scanner, now operational at HOVET, enables fast, safe and low-radiation assessments, and is expected to enhance diagnostic capabilities and inform future research.
