A new survey from Ollie reveals a gap between dog owners' perceptions and the reality of their pets' health. According to the survey, 60% of dogs in the U.S. are considered overweight or obese, though many pet parents may not realize the extent of this issue. In fact, three in five dog owners believe their pets are at an ideal weight, revealing a major perception gap that could be contributing to an obesity epidemic in pets, said the company.

"Dog obesity is a growing health crisis, with long-term effects on a pet’s quality of life, including joint issues, heart disease and shortened lifespans," said Ollie in a press release. "Yet, many owners aren’t aware their pets are overweight. This alert serves as a wake-up call for dog parents to take control of their pets’ health with the support of brands like Ollie, which offers personalized meal plans and portion control to ensure dogs maintain a healthy weight."

Key survey findings:

  • Awareness gap: Just 30% of pet owners knew that being able to easily feel their dog’s ribs is a sign of a healthy weight. Fewer knew about other indicators like the spine (20%) and hip bones (17%).
  • Perception versus reality: While 60% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight, 60% of owners believe their dog is at an ideal weight.
  • Weight sensitivity: Four in 10 pet owners are sensitive about others commenting on their dog's weight, with Gen Z (47%) and millennials (46%) being the most sensitive.
  • Health impacts: 53% of respondents recognize their dog’s weight has a significant impact on their health, and 35% acknowledge it has some impact.
  • Happiness and well-being: Nine in 10 dog owners believe their dog’s happiness and mental well-being are crucial to their overall health, with baby boomers leading this belief at 96%.

With more than half of pet owners agreeing that their dog's weight plays a significant role in their overall health and wellness, Ollie said it is stepping in to help owners better understand and address their pets' nutritional needs. A dog food delivery service that offers fresh, human-grade dog food, the company is offering a free weight screening and personalized meal plans led by the Ollie Health team to ensure dogs are getting the right portions and nutrients.
