Meals on Wheels America and PetSmart Charities have delivered 15 million pet meals to homebound seniors nationwide, reaching the milestone just ahead of Pet Appreciation Week (June 1–7, 2025).
The 15 millionth meal went to Kali Mae, a 7-year-old dachshund living in Waco, Texas, with her owner Sharon, who is blind and lives on a fixed income. Before receiving assistance, Sharon had to choose between feeding herself or her pet.
“My dog is what keeps me going,” Sharon said. “We’re best friends.”
Meals on Wheels America supports over 5,000 local programs addressing senior hunger and isolation. Since 2019, the organization has partnered with PetSmart Charities to deliver pet meals and services such as grooming, dog walking and veterinary care directly to seniors.
“Choosing between feeding yourself and your four-legged companion who serves as a lifeline is a choice no one should have to make,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “That’s why we’re so thrilled to achieve this incredible milestone alongside Meals on Wheels America.”
Studies show pet ownership can reduce loneliness and support emotional and physical well-being among seniors. However, half of Meals on Wheels clients report having no one else to help them care for their pets. The program’s pet assistance has enabled 97% of recipients to keep their animals, according to Meals on Wheels.
“One of the most devastating choices a senior has to make is whether they eat or their furry companions do,” said Ellie Hollander, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “Pets are another source of comfort and purpose for many seniors, so it’s an honor to be able to help support pet parenthood among seniors thanks to PetSmart Charities’ generous contributions.”
With continued support, the partnership plans to expand its reach to more communities and ensure seniors like Sharon can keep their pets without sacrificing their own health.
“She loves me – and I love her,” Sharon said of Kali Mae. “We stick together.”
